Nancy Lyons discusses the role of the healthcare industry in distributing COVID-19 vaccines during the pandemic and the challenges and inequities it exposed in the healthcare system, particularly in relation to influenza vaccination. It highlights disparities in vaccination rates among vulnerable populations, including racial and ethnic minority groups, and the impact of social determinants of health on immunization gaps.

Lyons emphasizes the important role of community pharmacies in improving vaccine access, especially in underserved communities, and their ability to address disparities in immunization. The COVID-19 pandemic highlighted the significant role of pharmacists in the distribution and administration of vaccines. Community pharmacies, conveniently located and accessible to a majority of the US population, played a critical part in the vaccination effort. The Federal Retail Pharmacy Program (FRPP) was established to distribute COVID-19 vaccines to chain and independent community pharmacies. While pharmacists will continue to administer COVID-19 vaccines, they will no longer have the authority to administer routine childhood vaccinations after the pandemic. Closing the influenza vaccination gap in vulnerable communities is the next focus for community pharmacies, building on their accomplishments during the pandemic.

Furthermore, it emphasizes the importance of diversity in the pharmacy profession and highlights initiatives aimed at increasing diversity and cultural competency among pharmacy students. Increasing diversity among pharmacists is crucial to address the cultural and linguistic needs of patients. The McKesson Foundation is providing grants to pharmacy schools to enhance diversity and cultural competency among future pharmacists. Pharmacists are called to take action by understanding their communities' needs, engaging in cultural competency training, and partnering with local influencers to offer vaccine education and clinics. They can also inspire the next generation of pharmacists through mentorship and encouraging youth to pursue careers in pharmacy.
