The survey conducted among community pharmacists revealed significant challenges faced during the COVID-19 pandemic. Pharmacists experienced increased workloads and burnout rates, leading to stress, anxiety, and depression. Community pharmacies, despite their crucial role, were not spared these challenges. Pharmacists took on additional responsibilities like patient education, stocking essential supplies, and implementing new procedures such as home delivery, contributing to the workload.
The study found that 62% of respondents reported increased workload, especially among those with fewer than 4 years of experience and those concerned about contracting COVID-19. The chaotic period in spring 2020 saw a surge in demand for face masks and sanitizers, adding pressure on pharmacy staff. New services like curbside pick-up and home delivery were introduced, and staff often worked without breaks to keep up with demand. Despite challenges, pharmacists collaborated well but expressed disappointment with management decisions, such as canceled bonuses and stagnant wages. The psychosocial work environment deteriorated for 59% of respondents due to increased workload, high sick leave rates, and customer conflicts. Despite these challenges, 55% of pharmacists did not believe patient safety was compromised.
Concerns about patient safety were linked to low staffing, high workloads, and communication issues with caretakers. Interestingly, respondents felt that patient safety was not directly impacted by external factors but emphasized the need for better communication with management to address working conditions.
In summary, the study highlighted the need for improved communication with management and further research into the effects of pharmacists’ work environments on patient safety. Despite the increased workload and challenging circumstances, pharmacists remained committed to their roles, emphasizing the importance of addressing these issues for the well-being of both pharmacists and patients.
