Pharmacists Protecting Patients from Online Drug Sellers

The Oath of the Pharmacist urges pharmacists to prioritize the well-being of patients and relieve their suffering. With an increasing number of people turning to the internet for cheaper and more accessible medications, pharmacists play a crucial role in educating patients about the risks associated with online drug retail. However, it has been discovered that about 95% of online drug sellers operate illegally, selling counterfeit or unapproved medicines without a valid prescription.

These illegal online drug sellers pose significant risks to patient safety, as the medications they offer may contain harmful ingredients like mercury and fentanyl. Many consumers are unaware that they are purchasing unsafe drugs, and misperceptions about online pharmacies are prevalent among Americans. Pharmacists, as trusted healthcare resources, can address these misconceptions and protect patients from harm.

To help safeguard patients from illegal online drug sellers, pharmacists can offer five essential pieces of advice:

1. Emphasize the need for a valid prescription when purchasing prescription medications, whether from online or brick-and-mortar pharmacies.
2. Encourage patients to verify the legitimacy and safety of online sellers through trusted websites like safe.pharmacy or legitscript.com.
3. Educate patients on how to identify and avoid counterfeit medications through initiatives like the Bad Meds public service campaign.
4. Advise patients to use prescription services like NeedyMeds and RefillWise to access discounts and find the best prices for their medications.
5. Refer patients to www.ASOPFoundation.pharmacy, a nonprofit organization offering free information and resources on staying safe and saving on medicines.

By following these guidelines and acting in accordance with the Oath of the Pharmacist, pharmacists can act as the frontline defense against illegal online drug sellers, safeguarding patient well-being and public health.
