Community Pharmacies as Care Access Solutions

A recent analysis published in the Journal of the American Pharmacists Association highlights the expanding role of community pharmacies in filling patient care access gaps.

With nearly 90% of Americans living within five miles of a community pharmacy, these establishments serve as the front door to the healthcare system and offer essential services beyond medication dispensing. Services now include comprehensive medication management, preventive screenings, chronic disease management, immunizations, and contraception. The study also reveals that rural areas rely more on regional franchises and independent pharmacies, while chain pharmacies dominate urban areas. Moreover, it emphasizes the importance of community pharmacies in public health initiatives like COVID-19 vaccinations. Despite widespread access, transportation remains a significant factor affecting accessibility, particularly for individuals without reliable transportation or limited access to public transport. Policy changes and community efforts are necessary to address transportation challenges and ensure equitable access to healthcare, particularly in rural and underserved areas.
