Wes Moffett discusses the potential benefits of using QR codes on prescription bottles in pharmacies. By incorporating QR codes, pharmacies can decrease costs, save time for technicians, promote environmental sustainability, improve customer relationships, and provide useful information about medications.

Currently, patients receive lengthy patient advisory leaflets (PALs) along with their prescriptions, which are often discarded or not fully read. By replacing these PALs with QR codes on the vial labels, patients have the option to scan the code and access the necessary drug information at any time. This reduces paper waste and printing costs for the pharmacy. Additionally, patients can easily refer to the QR code information if they have questions about their medication or experience new symptoms.

Moffett suggests that QR codes can also facilitate pill identification, as smartphones can display color images of the medication. For pharmacies, implementing QR codes can free up technician time, optimize the will call area, and potentially generate revenue through targeted advertising or discount coupons. Moffett highlights the personalized communication possibilities enabled by QR codes, such as refill reminders and symptom follow-ups. Despite the many advantages, Moffett questions why pharmacies have not utilized QR codes in the past.
